Meet the Brewers

Ballast Point Brewer
Colby Chandler

Newly elected President of the San Diego Brewers Guild. Spent time growing up as a Navy Brat at multiple locations around the United States. Lived in Japan for two years and then Hawaii for 11 years before moving to San Diego in 1994. His parents lived in the Seattle area, so this is where his habitual consumption of craft beer got it's start. Began brewing beer in San Diego as a hobby, while being a national corporate trainer for Ruth's Chris Steak House . Burnt out on 11 years of the restaurant business, he decided to go after a job he enjoyed instead of one for money. Colby has been the General Manager and a Brewer for Home Brew Mart / Ballast Point Brewing Company for the past 8 years. With the opening of the new Ballast Point Brewery at Scripps Ranch, he will remain the General Manager of Home Brew Mart and his brewing duties have switched over to mostly specialty brews. Colby has also recently become a Certified BJCP Judge. San Diego has some of the best beers in the world and Colby is happy to be a part of this great brewing community.

Head Brewer at Pizza Port Carlsbad

Place of Birth?
La Jolla, CA.

Beer philosophy.
Don’t really have one. I do believe that if someone is going to be a true beer drinker or
consider themselves any kind of beer aficionado than they should know about and
drink all styles of beer. I strive to have as many different types or styles of beer on
tap at the pub at all times so that people can get a taste of several different types of
beer when they come in. Other than that I’d say enjoy good beer everyday.

Favorite type of beer?
Well it depends on where I am, what I’m doing, what I’m eating, the time of day, the
weather, or what strikes my mood at that point in time. Point is that I like everything,
it just depends on the situation.

Hobbies?
Enjoying Music, and someday I’d like to finish working on my 1964 Lincoln Continental

Coronado Brewer
Shawn DeWitt

Right place, right time. That is my story for becoming a brewer. In early 1995, I
was presented an opportunity to be a partner in a new project that was to be called,
Coronado Brewing Company. At that time, I had never home brewed or had any
desire to brew. All I knew about beer was how to drink it, not make it. I learned to
brew at the old La Jolla Brewing Company on Fay Avenue in La Jolla under John
Atwater, and 11 years later, I am still brewing and learning about beer. I am lucky
to be a part of the beer business in San Diego where I have learned quite a bit from
my fellow brewers here in San Diego.

career for the Stone bottling line and has since been blessed to be a brewer in my
hometown of Coronado.
