The 118-year-old malthouse housing Mich. Weyermann & Co. KG Malzfabrik is a protected historic site. But behind the red-brick turn-of-the-century exterior lies the modernized heart of the world’s leading manufacturer of specialty brewing malts. Presided over by Sabine Weyermann, a fourth-generation member of the founding family, and her husband, Thomas Kraus-Weyermann, the company benefits as much from its roots in the past as it does from its recent expansion and modern overhaul. For over a century, Mich. Weyermann has been pursuing a policy of providing customizable, brandname specialty malts to breweries large and small, first in Bamberg and nearby regions, and currently to customers in virtually every continent of the world. Aided by new facilities and equipment, the company is better able than ever to serve its more than 900 customers worldwide, including future prospects in Asia and the United States. Tradition and up-to-date training are personified by the husband/wife team, both of whom graduated from the Weihenstephan school in nearby Munich, where Weyermann products are sampled by masterbrewers-to-be from all over the world. About one-third of the company’s regular rotation consists of specialty malts; the remainder is geared toward keeping Germany stocked with Pilsener. All malting is done to individual order in amounts ranging from 25-kg sacks to export-size containers.
Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity (QUAFF) is a group of men and women dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of homebrewing and beer evaluation in the greater San Diego area. We share knowledge, methods, new brew pub and microbrewery discoveries, and good homebrew at monthly meetings and special events. The club sponsors the America’s Finest City Homebrew Competition, an annual AHA-sanctioned competition open to any and all homebrewers. The club also evaluates and forwards members’ beer to AHA Club-Only competitions for particular beer styles. We are also involved in the national Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) activities, and sponsor beer judge study groups and qualifying exams. Many of the local homebrew supply shops offer discounts to QUAFF members. If you like beer, want to know beer styles better, brew your own beer, or are just curious as to what it takes to brew beer, QUAFF meetings are the place for you to come to get your questions answered. We meet the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7 PM at Callahan’s (8111 Mira Mesa Blvd.). Dues are $20 per year.

Ralph Olson General Manager/Owner Toll Free Number: 1-800-952-4873 Phone (DD): 509-574-5123 "I’ve never seen a beer too hoppy" "I like the hop for its preservative qualities, I plan to live to 250 years" "Each day has a new beginning as does myself” "If I err, it’s probably because of too much beer. Personally I don’t see this as a problem" "Hops are like me, full of attitude but flavorful." "Bitterness is an adult thing." "If you like good hops buy anywhere, if you like Great hops, buy from Hopunion CBS." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralph, our ’Head Hop’, was born in Spokane, but raised in Yakima. Growing up he worked in the fruit industry, thinning, picking, and the like. Can’t do that now. He spent four years at college obtaining a B.A. degree. He started working in the hop industry on April 1, 1978. He’s done practically everything within the trade, shipping, operations, receiving, purchasing, craft brewing sales, major sales. He started selling to the craft and home brewing industry in 1980. Currently he is in charge of purchasing hops from growers and selling hops to Craft breweries. He also oversees the receiving and inspection of hops that have been purchased by Hopunion CBS. Currently he is on the Board of Governors for the Master Brewer Association of the Americas, District Northwest, along with being voted treasurer for life with a local computer club. Ralph continues his many years of being on the board for the American Hop Museum, and is currently the Vice Chairman for the board of advisors for the Institute for Brewing Studies. He is also Chairman for the Wisconsin Credit Association, so pay your bills on time. Ralph is often asked how he got into the hop business. According to legend, Ralph ran into his ex boss at a bar over a bottle of beer, and they got talking about hops. The very next day he trooped down to the office, filled out an application and made such a pest of himself, that they had no other choice than to hire him! Little did they, or Ralph know that it would turn into a life long career.
